BAŞAK KARAFAKİ HAKKINDA
Çalışmalarımda başta kendiminki olmak üzere, çocukluğun karanlık labirentlerinde gezinmeyi; kabusları kovalamayı ve karanlık odalardaki karmaşık bilinçaltı ve duyguları yine çocukluk ve ergenlik kavramı üzerinden anlatmayı deniyorum. Bu nedenle eserlerimde genelde kendimi özdeşletirdiğim tek tip bir kız çocugu yer alıyor. Benim için kırmızı rengi anlık patlamaları, altın varak sıkışmışlık ve kafes hissini, siyah beyaz kontrastlığı ise bilinçaltı karmaşasını temsil ediyor ve bunların dışında herhangi bir renk kullanmayı tercih etmiyorum. 80'lerde çocukluk yasamış biri olarak ruhuma en işleyen hatıra beyaz yakalı siyah önlük ve siyah beyaz televizyon olduğu için belki de...
Çizim hayatına storyboard çizeri ve illustrator olarak başlayan Başak Karafaki 1975 yılında İstanbul'da doğdu. Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Sahne Dekor ve Kostüm Bölümü`nü 1999 senesinde birincilikle bitirdi ve uzun seneler reklam ve prodüksiyon ajansları için storyboard çizerliği, Ergenekon davası esnasında NTV için mahkeme ressamlığı yaptı. 2011 senesinde Bodrum'a taşınmasının ardından resim çalışmalarına ağırlık verdi. Eserleri 2019 senesinden beri çeşitli karma ve kişisel sergilerde yer aldı.
ABOUT BAŞAK KARAFAKİ
Başak Karafaki likes to navigate through the dark labyrinths of childhood, primarily her own; and tries to chase the nightmares away while attempting to explain the complexity of subconscious and emotions through the concept of childhood and adolescence in her works. For that reason, there is a little girl wearing a uniform with whom she usually identifies herself in her works. She employs the color red to portray her emotional outbursts, gold leaf to display the feelings of tightness and the sense of being caged, and the black and white contrast to show the complexity of the subconscious. She does not use any other colors. Perhaps, the salience of black and white stems from the impactful memory of black school uniforms with white collars and the presence of black and white TV for an 80s child.
Basak Karafaki was born in 1975 in Istanbul. She began her drawing career as an illustrator after having graduated as the valedictorian of her class from Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts Stage Decoration and Costume Department in 1999. She worked as a storyboard illustrator for advertising and production agencies for many years and performed sketches for courts for NTV during the Ergenekon case. She moved to Bodrum in 2011 and shifted her focus on her paintings. Since then, her work has been exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions since 2019. She also cooperated with numerous authors to illustrate books.
